Paud Church: A Legacy of Faith and Service

Nestled in the serene hamlet of Paud, this little church has been a beacon of hope, faith, and love for over a century. Founded in 1912 with funds graciously bequeathed by Mrs. Harvey, a devoted Scottish missionary, the church stands as a testament to her deep faith and unwavering commitment to serving the people of this land. She established it in loving memory of her dear sister, Miss Rebecca Barnett Harvey.

The location, with its rolling hills and gentle rivers, must have reminded the Scottish missionaries of their homeland—a place where God’s presence could be felt in the beauty of nature. Alongside the church, a mission and orphanage were established to provide shelter, care, and education for underprivileged and orphaned children. Many missionaries served here, dedicating their lives to nurturing both the children and the congregation.

Among these devoted servants of Christ, one name shines brightly—Rev. Dharmaji Kale. With tireless devotion and a heart full of love, he shepherded this little church until his passing in 1972. Affectionately known as "Pappa", Rev. D.G. Kale was more than just a priest; he was a father, a guide, and a pillar of faith. He also served as the warden of the boys' section in the boarding school, ensuring that each child felt cared for and loved. The Kale family, including his devoted wife and their seven children, made Paud their home, and to this day, their bond with the church remains strong.

Another cherished figure in the church’s history was Miss Wallace Smith, fondly called "Mumma" by the children she cared for. Her love and compassion left an indelible mark on the lives she touched. However, as the British era came to a close, the mission work gradually dwindled due to a lack of manpower, leading to the closure of the boarding school. The church, though standing firm, witnessed a diminishing congregation as many members migrated to cities in search of better opportunities.A defining moment came with the passing of Rev. D.G. Kale, leaving the church without a priest and with only a handful of worshippers. But God had a plan.

Amidst these challenges, Bathuel Kale, the second son of Rev. D.G. Kale, stepped forward with unwavering faith, determined to keep the church alive. Though the journey was fraught with obstacles—raging monsoons, bitter winters, and scorching summers—he pressed on, trusting that God would lead the way. Through his perseverance and God’s grace, the church that once had only five members now welcomes 25-50 worshippers every Sunday.

This little church in Paud is more than just a building; it is a testament to God’s faithfulness and the unwavering spirit of those who have kept its light shining through the years. It stands as a place of worship, hope, and renewal, welcoming all who seek God’s love.

As we look to the future, we carry forward the legacy of those who came before us, ensuring that Paud Church remains a sanctuary of faith for generations to come.
